Minutes of the March 5, 2004 meeting
PRESENT: Scott Bradley, Dan Edlebeck,
George Ferencz, Stuart Glosser, Anthony Gulig, Anne Hamilton, Chris Henige,
Linda Holmes, Larry Kenney, John Howat, Phil Johns, Diana Rogers-Adkinson
for Simone DeVore, Ann Ruff, Larry Schuetz, Nicole Urbaniak and Sue Wildermuth.

Larry Schuetz, presiding as chair in Barbara Monfils’
absence, called the meeting to order at 2:15 p.m.
Tony Gulig moved, with a second by George Ferencz,
to approve the March 5, 2004 agenda. The motion carried.
Phil Johns moved and Scott Bradley seconded the approval
of the February 20, 2004 minutes.
The motion carried.
Leslie Meyer introduced Nicole Urbaniak, the new student
representative from the College of Education.
Linda Holmes moved to receive and record the grade
basis change for the proposal from the Accounting Department for ACCOUNT
493 Internship in Accounting. The motion was seconded
by Stuart Glosser. The motion carried.
George Ferencz moved to approve the Art Department’s
proposal for a new course, ARTHIST 320 Graphic
Design History. Chris Henige seconded this motion. It was amended
to require inclusion of a statement of how the course related to program
assessment goals on a Stuart Glosser/Larry Kenney motion. The motion
then carried, pending receipt of a revised syllabus with the program assessment
included

The proposal from the Languages & Literatures
Department for a new course, ENGLISH 483 Controversies
in Criticism, was approved on an Anne Hamilton/Phil Johns motion.
The motion carried.
Anne Hamilton moved to approve a second new course,
SPANISH
320 Spanish for Spanish Speakers, from the Languages & Literatures
Department with a second by Sue Wildermuth. The motion carried.
Phil Johns moved to approve the following proposals
for change in submajors for the Languages and Literatures Department:
English
(BA/BS) and English (BSE). Tony
Gulig seconded the motion. The motion carried.
The proposal from the Marketing Department to change
a submajor, Marketing Minor, was approved
on a Stuart Glosser/Phil Johns motion. The motion carried.
Anne Hamilton moved to approve, with a second by Phil
Johns, the proposal from the Political Science Department for a new course,
POLISCI
321 American Interest Group Politics, and the following proposals
for change in submajors: Political Science (BA/BS),
Political Science (BSE),
Social
Studies – Broadfield Political Sciences I (BSE),
Social Studies – Broadfield Political Science II (BSE), Political
Science Minor, and Political Science
Education Emphasis. The motion carried.
The proposals for the Sociology Department to create
the prefix, CRIMJUS, and to add a new course
CRIMJUS
321 Criminal Investigationwere approved on a Phil Johns/Stuart
Glosser motion. The motion carried.
Phil Johns moved to approve the following proposals
for the Sociology Department: change in submajors for Sociology
(BA/BS), Sociology: Criminal Justice
Emphasis (BA/BS), Sociology BSE, Social
Studies – Broadfield Sociology I Emphasis, Social
Studies – Broadfield Sociology II Emphasis, Sociology
Minor, Criminal Justice Minor,
and Family and Health Studies Minor.
Tony Gulig seconded the motion. The motion carried.
The following proposals from the Special Education
Department were approved on a Sue Wildermuth/Tony Gulig motion: Change
in submajors – Special Education Cognitive
Disabilities Elementary Emphasis and Special
Education Learning Disabilities K-9 Emphasis; Deletion of submajors
– Special Education Learning Disabilities
6-12 Emphasis, Special Education
Emotional/Behavioral Disorders K-9 Emphasis, Special
Education Emotional/Behavioral Disorders 6-12 Emphasis, and Special
Education Cognitive Disabilities Secondary Emphasis. The motion
carried.
There was a discussion on writing across the curriculum.
Larry Schuetz indicated the upper division-writing requirement in the major,
the standards and how they are satisfied, vary by department. Schuetz
asked to have the Provost’s office share with the University Curriculum
Committee at its next meeting its findings on the writing survey.
He said there is an effort to promote writing across the curriculum.
Schuetz also indicated there is a computer proficiency requirement.
The meeting was adjourned at 2:45 pm on a Chris Henige/Anne
Hamilton motion. Motion carried.
