Course justification:
Student athletes spend a great deal of time in their
participation in intercollegiate athletics at the University. Most athletes
spend a minimum of 20 hours per week as they are being instructed in each
specific sport in which they participate. During this time they are being
taught sport techniques, strategies, and physical conditioning. During
their sport careers the student-athletes will learn how to budget their
time, work with others, and function in a team. At the present time two
universities in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference give
their student athletes credit for participating in Intercollegiate Sports/
Also, at the present time students at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater
receive 1 credit per semester for participating in Marching Band, Pom Pons,
and Color Guard. This proposal will be giving student-athletes the opportunity
for credit that is afforded other University of Wisconsin - Whitewater
students participating in extracurricular activities.
Relationship to program assessment objectives:
General Studies.
Augments credits towards graduation but is not substituted
for
440-192 - Personal Health and Fitness.
Budgetary impact:
This proposal is currently being funded by GPR and SUFAC
dollars to athletics. This elective will be instructed by the coaches who
are currently part of the Intercollegiate Athletic staff.
Course description:
Intercollegiate athletics participation is open to all
students who are selected to participate on an intercollegiate athletic
team at the University of Wisconsin -Whitewater. The student-athlete must
participate in the physical activity and lectures pertaining to the preparation
of a varsity athletic team for the entire season to receive credit for
the class.
Grade Basis/Grading:
This course is S/NC only.
Course requisites:
Students must take this course during the semester that
their sport season ends.
The student-athlete must be eligible to participate in
athletics practice as defined by the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference.

Course objectives and tentative course syllabus:
The objective of the course is to have the student-athletes
who participate in intercollegiate athletics receive credit for their participation
in a University sponsored extra-curricular activity.
