II.        Relationship to mission and strategic plan of institution, and/or College/Department goals and objectives.

 

A.     Relationship to Political Science Program Objectives

         The recategorization of the 820-315/515 Women and American Politics course as an Area I course will meet the Political Science Subject Matter Objectives 1 (All majors will have an understanding of the American Political system . . .) and 3b (All students will have a knowledge of the structure, operation, and process of the institutions of American Government and will have an understanding of the political process and the major actors in the process).   Further, this course meets Cognitive Development Objective 1 (All majors will have acquired the analytical skills needed for the analysis of political phenomena) and Skill Objective 1 (All majors will exhibit writing proficiency in the discipline).     

 

B.      The 820-472 Government and Politics Of China course will meet the Political Science Assessment Plan objectives in the following ways: (1) It will teach students about the comparative method as a research tool for understanding the politics in a non-democratic system (Subject Matter Objectives 2);  (2)  Students will learn about major theories of studying  Chinese government and politics (Subject Matter Objectives 3c); (3)  Students will become acquainted with the structure, process, and operation of a non-American political system (Subject Matter Objectives 3c); (4)  Students will be aware of the varied ways in which government and political systems are organized and operated (Subject Matter Objectives 3c); (5) Students will, through extensive class discussion, writing assignments, and application of the comparative method, develop analytical skills needed to understand political phenomena (Cognitive Development Objective 1).

 

         The 820-463 Conflict Resolution and Crisis Management in International Politics course will meet objectives 1, 3, 4 and 5 as listed above.

 

III.       Rationale

 

A.           The recategorization of 820-315 Women and American Politics, along with the development of a women and international affairs course, will provide students the opportunity to take classes that focus on women in both the domestic and international setting.

 

B.      In the Political Science major students must take credits in various subcategories.  This action is necessary to specify the categories under which the new courses 820-463 and 820-472 fall.
