Course justification: For several years the department has been accepting students with the potential to be successful music majors but who need additional instruction before qualifying at the appropriate standard of admission. We have no course of study for them other than to enroll in private instruction at the minor level, 150-126. Our current system greatly limits the opportunity for the student to realize their potential, due to the limited contact hours available to minors.

Relationship to program assessment objectives: Private instruction in the primary performance area fulfills essential objectives necessary for professional preparation. Private lessons relate to the following specific program objectives:

a) exhibit understanding of musical interpretation and artistic self-expression (cognitive development);

b) demonstrate performance skills developed to the highest level in one performing area appropriate to a particular emphasis (skill objective); and

c) read music at sight at a level appropriate to degree emphasis (skill objective).

Budgetary impact: Generally, the number of probationary majors is quite small. We anticipate accommodating probationary majors with current staffing.

Course description: This course is intended for students accepted as probationary music majors. Students allowed to enroll have demonstrated potential in their performing medium, but need to review the basics of playing their instrument and/or need work in some performance skills to catch up to the level of a first semester music major. This course counts toward the semester credit load and will be computed into the grade point average. It will not be included in the credit count toward graduation. This course is not repeatable. At the conclusion of one semester of "0" lessons, the student must reaudition to be accepted as a major in the department. A grade of "C" or lower and/or nonacceptance as a music major will be cause for the removal of the student from the program.  NOTE:  Does not count toward degree.

Course requisites: Acceptance as a probationary music major.

If dual listed, graduate level requirements: N/A

Course objectives and tentative course syllabus: The course objectives are to assist the student in reaching the performance level of a first semester music major by individualizing instruction to help the student fulfill deficiencies identified at the audition. Syllabi for private lessons, including literature choices, are not feasible due to multiple sections and the fact that the music used with each student differs by performance area.

Bibliography: Bibliographies for private lessons are not feasible due to multiple sections and the fact that the music used with each student differs by performance area. Additionally, all music selected is individualized to meet each student’s needs.
