Journalism Major
Emphasis in International Journalism
3/1 Program with Deakin University, Australia
(Three years at UW-W/One year at Deakin University, Geelong, Victoria campus.)

Objectives: (1) To prepare journalists for the global work environment

(2) to attract high quality students to UW-W without significantly altering current journalism requirements

Highlights for Print and Broadcast options

· Requires 34 UW-W credits. No change from existing Print and Broadcast Journalism programs.

· Requires 2.75 GPA in major at UW-W before Australia study.

· One Deakin Unit = 3 UW-W credits.

· The UW-W student enrolls in four Deakin Courses (units)/semester or 8 units/year.

· The student will participate in a journalism internship in Australia but receive internship credit at UW-W. Deakin does not have a separate course for "Internships" but will sponsor and coordinate placement of UW-W students at Australian print or broadcast outlets.

· No more than 6 Deakin journalism/communication courses (6 units, 18 credits) may count toward UW-W major. Additional Deakin credits must be selected with consent of advisor and may count toward minor and/or general education. It is suggested that students take courses unique to Australasia history, political science, sociology and culture.

· Final Travel Study report must be completed after student returns to UW-W and include a portfolio of work done in Australia plus a 10 page scholarly analysis comparing journalism in both countries.
