I. Detailed
explanation of changes (use FROM/TO format)
FROM
A. There are currently
two courses, 448-468 and 448-469, and each course is 1 credit. Both courses are
required of
individuals who are not licensed to teach but wish to coach in Wisconsin. The course
currently gives ASEP
(American Sport Education Program) and NFICEP (National Federation
Interscholastic Coaches
Education Program) certification.
TO
The two courses will be
combined into one course and titled WIAA Coaching Certification: Coaching
Principles
and Sport First Aid.
A. The ASEP and NFICEP
is being dropped because the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association,
the
organization that
certifies coaches in Wisconsin, does not require the ASEP/NFICEP certification
if
students take a
college course that covers the needed coaching content. The proposed course
content
meets the
requirements of the WIAA. In addition, the elimination of the ASEP/NFICEP
certification
saves students
approximately $120 for materials associated with certification. If students
wish to
pursue the
ASEP/NFICEP certification the instructors of the course could arrange for this
option
within the revised
configuration of the course.
B. The courses are being
combined because both courses are required for WIAA coaching certification.
The combined course
format better assures that students will have all the coaching knowledge needed
to be certified to
coach.
C. The course is being
increased to 3 credits because all phases of Coaching Education and Sport First
Aid must be covered
for certification from the WIAA and that cannot be done adequately within the
current two credit
format. The Sport First Aid content will continue as it is currently offered
but the
content area in
Coaching Principles has been increased.
D. The course number has
been changed to the 100 level since this course is the only course in the
coaching minor
curriculum that includes all facets of coaching education. This course should
be
the one selected by
students if they are only going to take one course in coaching education.
II.
Justification
for action
A. The Coaching
Principles content cannot be covered in a one-credit course.
B. The ASEP (American
Sport Education Program) and NFICEP (National Federation Interscholastic
Coaches Education
Program) is being dropped from the title because the Wisconsin Interscholastic
Athletic Association
does not require the certification if the college course covers all the needed
coaching content.
Frank McCormick, WIAA, has approved the proposed course, as meeting the
needed course
content for coaching certification. WIAA Coaching Certification is being added
to
the title.
C. 448-469, Coaching
Principles, and 448-468, Sport First Aid, are being combined into one course
since Coaching
Principles and Sport First Aid are both required for coaching certification.
D. The new number for
the course will be 448-100. The new number better reflects the lower
division nature of
the course.
