DESCRIPTION OF THE PROGRAM
-
Bulletin description of the program:
The Service Management emphasis will provide Production/Operations
Management majors a thorough understanding of effective methods in managing
service operations.
-
List of courses to be included in the program:
Development of a new emphasis in the Production Operations
Management major. This emphasis would require the completion of three of
the following courses which are currently available as part of the POM
elective courses:
250456-Modern Manufacturing Systems (to be retitled Fundamentals
of Supply Chain Management)
250466-Management of Service Operations
250480-Management Information Systems
250486-Supervisory Management
250493-Cooperative/Internship in Management
-
Goals and learning objectives of the program:
The new Service Emphasis will help students understand
the complex nature of service operations including the role of lead times,
quality, perishability and forecasting.
-
RELATION OF THE PROGRAM TO INSTITUTIONAL MISSION, STRATEGIC
PLAN AND COLLEGE/DEPARTMENT GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
This change supports the university’s mission by preparing
our graduates to understand the role of service sector economy in the Southwestern
Wisconsin region.
-
RELATION OF THE PROGRAM TO OTHER PROGRAMS ON CAMPUS, IN THE
UW SYSTEM, AND IN THE REGION
This new emphasis does not overlap with any programs
in the College of Business. The service emphasis utilizes current existing
courses from the Management department to provide a unique educational
experience for our Production/Operations Management (POM) majors. Currently,
there are no programs in the southeastern Wisconsin region that provide
this emphasis in conjunction with the POM major. This emphasis will provide
qualified graduates to meet the needs of service firms in southern Wisconsin
and northern Illinois.
-
PROJECTED SOURCE(S) OF RESOURCES TO SUPPORT THE PROGRAM
There will be no additional costs to be incurred since
courses are all currently available
-
STUDENT NEED AND/OR DEMAND FOR THE PROGRAM
This change is in line with the recommendations provided
to the POM faculty in consultations with the POM Advisory Board (consisting
of 25 industry members). The Advisory Board stressed the importance of
preparing our students for the growing service economy. The emphasis ensures
that students interested in the service management field get the necessary
training and obtain the necessary recognition.
