I. Detailed explanation of changes (use FROM/TO format)

    Course Revision
                FROM
Two laboratories per week of two hours each.
                TO
A single laboratory per week of three hours duration. See attached syllabus. All topics will be covered
as in the past, but some individual components within lab topics may be deleted. Deletions will be kept
to a minimum by efficiencies generated in one longer lab as compared to two shorter labs (e.g. only one
orientation lecture and less set-up/take-down time for students)

    Description
                FROM
An introduction to plant life, with emphasis on the basic concepts of structure, function, growth and
reproduction. Additional topics will include cell physiology, metabolism, and diversity. Four hours of
laboratory and three hours of lecture per week. This course is prerequisite to all advanced courses in
biology for majors and minors. Offered every semester. Coreq: 760-141
                TO

reproduction. Additional topics will include cell physiology, metabolism, and diversity. Three hours of
laboratory and three hours of lecture per week. This course is prerequisite to all advanced courses in

    Contact Hours
FROM Seven contact hours per week (112/semester)
TO six contact hours per week (96/semester)

    Credit Hours
             FROM  Five
             TO  Four

II. Justification for action

(1) A three-hour block of lab time provides a better platform for inquiry-directed laboratory exercises than do two hour lab blocks. Inquiry-directed science curricula are recommended by Project Kaleidoscope and other organizations advocating science education reforms.

(2) Part of the department’s gradual move from two contact hours to three for laboratories in majors’ courses of four or five credits, in keeping with standards set in Chemistry and Physics.

(3) Standing educational goals for this class can be met just as well, but more efficiently, in this format by reducing unintentional redundancy with General Zoology, Introduction to Genetics, and Introduction to Cell Biology.

(4) Three lecture/one lab format courses can be scheduled more easily for both faculty and students than three lectures/two labs, especially for students taking more than one lab course in a given semester.

(5) Provides scheduling and curricular room for the proposed Biotechnology Laboratory Methods course in the Biology: Cell Biology and Physiology Emphasis and for additional electives in the Biology: Ecology and Field Biology Emphasis.
