Olson, Michael Oldani, Ellie Schemenauer, Jeff Heinrich, Debra Heiber,
and
Elizabeth Hachten,
Chair.
The committee needed to elect a representative to the College
Budget and
Planning Committee. Jolly Emrey volunteered to serve again. She
was elected
by acclamation.
Announcements:
The chair announced that she will be off campus for our
next meeting scheduled for September 17th. She requested that the
meeting be canceled since there is no curriculum deadline on that
date. The committee approved canceling the meeting on a
Cartwright/Thiibodeaux motion.
At the April 30, 2009 meeting of this committee the issue of
comprehensive majors vs the traditional major/minor was
discussed. The committee felt that guidelines should be
established to justify why a comprehensive major is needed and how it
relates to the goal of providing a liberal arts education. It was
suggested that we define "a liberal arts education" in order to frame
the guidelines for the comprehensive major. Beth Olson and Paul
House volunteered to write a definition. The chair would like
Beth and Paul to present their draft of the definition and bring the
comprehensive major issue to the table again at our October 1st
meeting. The chair also requested that the issue of changing the
foreign language requirement be brought back to the table for
discussion at our October 1st meeting as well.
The chair announced that the October 15th meeting is the
deadline for submitting proposals effective in Summer 2010.
Ellie Schemenauer announced that she will be unable to attend
the September 18th UCC meeting and asked if a member of the committee
could substitute for her. Ellen Davis volunteered.
Witonsky/Melero moved to
approve the following Languages & Literatures and Race & Ethnic
proposals:
Course revision for
CHICANO_ENGLISH 200 "Chicano Literature:

preferred way to indicate Chicano_Chicana)
Course
revision for CHICANO_ENGLISH
201 "Contemporary Chicano
Literature." The motion passed unanimously.
Thibodeaux/Schemenauer moved to
approve the following History proposals:
Emrey/Davis moved to approve
the cross listing of the EDFOUND
341"Urban Education: Issues and
Policies" with Political Science.
The motion passed unanimously.
The question was asked as to when proofs for the new catalog were
due. They are due to Dr. Hachten by October 9th. The
procedure is correct the proof in red and add any updates if
necessary. If the updates require curricular action and they have
been submitted to this committee through this meeting, it is suggested
you attach the proposal(s) to the proofs and indicate this in not a
change but a reflection of proposals approved at the college level and
are expected to be approved through the curricular process by October.
The meeting adjourned on a Thibodeaux/House motion.
