COLLEGE OF LETTERS & SCIENCES
CURRICULUM COMMITTEE

AGENDA

The Committee will meet THURSDAY, May 6, 2010
at 2:15 PM in White 6C

  1. Approval of the April 1, 2010 Minutes.
  2. Announcements
  3. Political Science and Sociology
    1. New course PAX 488 "Special Topics in Peace and Social Justice."  (This Capstone Special Topics course teaches interdisciplinary analytical approaches to peace and social justice. Based on the sponsoring department, the topics under investigation will vary. Students will learn peace-building skills through theoretical and practical exercises and active participation in the face of fundamental environmental, economic and human crises).
    2. New Minor "Peace and Justice Studies Minor."  (The Peace and Justice minor will offer an interdisciplinary approach to understanding peace as the cumulative goal of conflict resolution and transformation. Alternatives to war and dehumanization are taught and modeled for how individuals, organizations, and governments promote peace and justice from interpersonal to global contexts. Through coursework and experiential learning students are encouraged to become active participants and leaders in creating strategies for achieving and sustaining non-violence, human rights, environmental and social justice).
  4. MCS
    1. Change in  the Management Computer Systems Major(Modifies the list of courses acceptable as the MCS elective and brings the catalog description in line with current advising practice).
  5. Mathematics and Computer Science
    1. Change in the Computer Science Minor(The minor requirements have been reworded  to avoid the need for a commonly occurring AR personalization. The actual requirements are not changing).
  6. Social Work
    1. Change in the Human Services Foundation Minor(These changes, which expand the range of options for students in the Human Services Minor, are congruent with the Essential Learning Outcomes—especially as related to “Critical and creative thinking” and “Ethical reasoning and action.”  They also expand students' awareness of critical issues in human services such as writing skills, communication with people of other cultures, and an expanded view of the human life cycle. All of these are embellishments of the abilities the minor addresses).
  7. Receive and Record
    1. Prerequisite change for PHYSCS 364. (The change is needed because the introductory course sequence was changed).
    2. Deletion of COMPSCI 173 "Introduction of FORTRAN Programming."  (This course will not be taught in the future.  Students who might have taken this course will not take a new course in Scientific Computing [COMPSCI 447] ).
    3. Number change for COMPSCI 370 "Introduction to Artificial Intelligence."  (The Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences recently created two new courses, MATH 370 and COMPSCI 370. Both of these courses will be taught for the first time in the next year. It leads to confusion when two courses with the same number exist within the same department).
    4. Change in the Web Site Development and Administration certificate program.  (The Art Department is phasing out the ARTSTUDIO 222 course. The new Media Arts and Game Development major is introducing the new course MAGD 210 (Visual Design for Digital Media) which should be an even more appropriate course for the Web Development and Administration certificate students).
    5. Change in the Web Site Development and Administration minor.  (The Art Department is phasing out the ARTSTUDIO 222 course. The new Media Arts and Game Development major is introducing the new course MAGD 210 (Visual Design for Digital Media) which should be an even more appropriate course for the Web Development and Administration certificate students. Also the Web Site Development and Administration minor is popular among MCS majors. MCS majors are required to take MCS 231 as part of their major requirement. Thus, AR personalizations are required for all of them. The rewording of requirement (3) and making MCS 231 a unique requirement will allow these personalizations to be handled automatically).
  8. Other Old Business
    1. Dr. Hachten will be sending  a memo to committee members outlining a draft proposal for changing the foreign language requirement.  Dean Pinkerton will be a guest at our meeting to discuss staffing and other budgetary needs to implement the proposed change.
