CURRICULUM COMMITTEE
College of Letters and Sciences
Meeting of October 2, 2008

    PRESENT:  Kris Curran, Paul House, Pilar Melero, Rex Hanger, Molly Patterson, Jerre Collins, Geetha Samaranayake,  Steve Sahyun, Jolly Emrey, Elizabeth Olson, Larry Neuman, Ellie Schemenauer, Yamin Ahmad (rep. David Welsch), and Elizabeth Hachten, Chair.

    1. The minutes of the September 4, 2008 meeting were approved on a Neuman/Sahyun motion.
    2. The committee needed to elect a representative to the UCC to fill the second year of Jeff Zimmerman's term. Elizabeth Olson agreed to be nominated and she was elected by acclamation.
    3. Announcements:  The chair reminded the committee that the deadline for proposals effective Summer 09 is the October 16, 2008 meeting.  Proposals should be submitted to the committee secretary by 4:00 pm. Wednesday, October 8, 2008.  The chair also reminded the committee that  490 Workshop and 496 Special Studies courses need to be approved for each semester they are taught.  The deadline for submission of  these courses is usually the first week of the semester before they are planned to be offered.
    4. Curran/Sahyun moved to approve the new emphasis Biology Honors and to delete Cell/Physiology-Honors and  Ecology/Field-Honors.  There was a friendly amendment made by Curran/Emrey to change the wording of the GPA requirement from 3.40 overall GPA to 3.40 combined cumulative GPA and a 3.40 GPA within the major. The motion to approve the amendment to the proposal passed unanimously.  The amended motion passed unanimously.
    5. Curran/Emrey moved to approve deletion of the Biotechnology submajor  The motion passed unanimously.
    6. Curran/Collins moved to approve the changes in the Pre-professional Medical EmphasisThe motion passed unanimously.
    7. Neuman/Melero moved to approve the change in the Asian Studies Minor.  The motion passed unanimously.
    8. Emrey/Hanger moved to approve the change in the Political Science Education Emphasis Minor.  The motion passed unanimously.
    9. Collins/Olson  moved to receive and record the following informational item:
      1. Change in the Management Computer Systems Major 
      2. Change in the Actuarial Mathematics Minor.
      3. Requisite change for the following Mathematics courses:
        1. MATH 253 Calculus and Analytic Geometry I.
        2. MATH 254 Calculus and Analytic Geometry II   A question was raised  regarding whether or not  the prerequisite of MATH 250 with a  grade of B or better was too restrictive.  The Math Dept. representative stated that  part of the requisite has been in place for some time and it  didn't seem to cause a problem.
        3. MATH 255 Calculus and Analytic Geometry III
        4. MATH 280 Discrete Mathematics
      4. Cross list SOCIOLGY 290 "Sociology of Pacific Asia" with ASIANST
      5. Add grade basis to HISTRY 790 "History Workshop"
The motion passed unanimously
  1. New Business: 
      1. The chair distributed a copy of the Letters & Sciences International Education Committee Procedures and Criteria for Recommending L&S Travel Study Courses.  She asked that faculty trip leaders submit a copy of their proposal to the committee for review at least two weeks before the deadline.
      2. The chair also distributed a copy of  the Curriculum Flow Chart so that new committee members would be more familiar with the curricular process.
      3. A question was raised regarding the status of the establishment of a maximum number of  498 (Independent Study) credits a student could use toward degree.  A committee has developed a set of recommendations but these have not yet been brought to the UCC for action.
