  1. The minutes of the December 4, 2008 meeting were approved with a typo correction on a Schemenauer/Samaranayake motion.
  2. Announcements:  None
  3. Neuman/House moved to approve the New Submajor "Sociology - Family and Health Studies Emphasis."   Some committee members  suggested that the AR format for the minor needed to be clarified.   The discussion then developed into a broader discussion of majors and minors vs. super majors and whether the college's primary role is to provide students a liberal education while preparing them for the workforce or whether the primary focus should be on tailoring majors to meet job requirements    It was decided that this topic should be taken back to the departments for their input and then brought up for further discussion at a future meeting.   The proposal was withdrawn from further consideration by Dr. Neuman in order to refine the AR format.
  4. Winship/Emrey moved to receive and record the following informational items:
    1. Add Cross-listing to the following courses:
      1. GEOGRAPHY 361 "Geography of South and Southeast Asia" cross list with ASIANST

      3. POLISCI 460 "Government and Politics of Asia" cross list with ASIANST

The motion passed unanimously.

  1. The revision of the wording of the 498R [research] proposal was again discussed.  Sahyun/Olson moved that the wording of the proposal be changed to read : "Create a new section of Independent Study, 498R, limited to students participating in the Undergraduate Research Program OR to students whose faculty -recommended project meets departmental expectations for undergraduate research.  Departments are charged with determining what activities do and do not meet the spirit of 498R activities for their majors." and that this motion be forwarded to the UCC.  The motion passed unanimously. Dr. Hachten will draft a memo to the UCC recommending the change.
  1. The meeting adjourned on a House/Emrey motion.
Respectfully Submitted
