Meeting of April 2, 2009


    PRESENT:  Ellen Davis, Paul House, Pilar Melero, Rex Hanger, Jennifer Thibodeaux, Trudy Witonsky, Geetha Samaranayake, Steve Sahyun, Elizabeth Olson, Jim Winship, Larry Neuman, Ellie Schemenauer,  Debra Heiber and Elizabeth Hachten, Chair.

  1. The minutes of the March 5, 2009  meeting were approved on a Davis/House motion.
The chair requested that we move items 2 Announcements and 3 Election of UCC Representatives to the end of the agenda.  The committee approved.
  1. Davis/Schemenauer moved to approve the new emphasis "Integrated Science and Business Water Resources Emphasis."   The motion passed unanimously.
  2. Davis/Schemenauer moved to approve the new course BIOLOGY 442 "Environmental Toxicology."  The motion passed unanimously.
  3. Davis/Winship  moved to approve the new course BIOLOGY 448 "Bioinformatics."  with a friendly amendment  to add BIOLOGY 141 and 142 to the prerequisite.  The Mathematics department requested a consultation on the course. The motion passed unanimously with the amendment and the provision that Mathematics would be consulted before the course came before the UCC.
  4. Davis/Witonsky moved to approve the changes to the following Biology BSE submajors:
    1. Biology-Cell/Physiology BSE
    2. Biology-Ecology/Field Biology BSE.
    3. Biology Education Minor (BSE)  The motion passed unanimously.
  5. Samaranayake/Davis moved to approve the new course MATH  352/552 "Infinite Processes for the Elementary Teacher." and the new course MATH 370/570 "Problem Solving for the Elementary Teacher."  The motion passed unanimously.
  6. Samaranayake/Olson moved to approve the new course COMPSCI 370 "Introduction to Artificial Intelligence."  The motion passed unanimously.
  7. Hanger/Davis moved to approve the change in the Environmental Studies Minor.   The motion passed unanimously.
  8. Thibodeaux/Witonsky moved to approve the new course HISTRY 336 "Empires & Invasions in the Pre-Modern Middle East:  500-1500."  Thibodeaux/Winship then moved to amend the proposal to change the prerequisite from "None" to "Sophomore stand or consent of instructor" to be consistent with the prerequisites of other 300 level courses in the History department.  Both motions were approved unanimously.
  9. Neuman/Schemenauer moved to approve the new course ANTHROPL 305 "Native North America Today: People, Culture and Survival."  It was brought out that Race and Ethnic Studies had been consulted but that the consultation page had not yet been signed because the coordinator had not been able to discuss the proposal with Michael Oldani.  The committee was informed that this would be done shortly.  The motion passed unanimously.
  10. Neuman/Witonsky moved to approve the new submajor "Sociology Honors Emphasis (BA/BS)."  After discussion,  the proposal was amended to  add the words "for graduation" after the 3.40 GPA Required in the Major/Submajor and to change Area 10 in the AR format to read "Additional elective units from areas 2, 3, 4, and 9 above chosen in consultation with advisor to total 54.  GENED 130 not applicable."  The motion as amended passed unanimously.
  11. Neuman/Winship moved to approve changes to the following Sociology majors/submajors:
    1. Sociology Major
    2. "Sociology - Global Comparative Emphasis."
    3. "Sociology - Criminal Justice Emphasis."
    4. Sociology Minor.   The motion passed unanimously.
  12. Neuman/Samaranayake moved to approve  the modification of Social Studies-Broadfield Sociology Emphasis I to consolidate Social Studies - Broadfield I and Social Studies - Broadfield II ant to change the name to Social Studies: Broadfield-Sociology and to delete Social Studies: Broadfield-Sociology Option II   The motion passed unanimously.
  13. Witonsky/Neuman  moved to approve the new course ENGLISH/RACEETH 202 "Introduction to U.S. Latino/a Literature."  The motion passed unanimously.
  14. Sahyun/House moved to receive and record the following informational items:
    1. Change in the Anthropology Minor.
    2. Add the course option BIOLOGY 311 to item 3 in the emphasis for the following Biology programs:
      1. Biology - Cell/Physiology Emphasis (BA/BS)
      2. Biology - Pre-Biomedical Professions
    3. Description change and title change for HISTRY 305 FROM Industrial America, 1877-1919 TO From the Guilded Age to the World Stage, 1875-1920.
    4. Change in the Mathematics Minor: Elementary Education Emphasis.
    5. Change in the Integrated Science and Business Major.   The motion passed unanimously.
  15. Announcements:
    1. Ellie Schemenauer announced there will be a  workshop  entitled "Teaching About  Latin America and the Caribbean: New Directions, New Realities  A Curriculum Development  Workshop"   on Friday May 1st and Saturday May 2nd.  She urged all who are  interested to attend and also to encourage  Departmental colleagues to attend.
    2. Debra Heiber also announced that we should look at new minors in other colleges to add to our  L&S list of approved minors for L&S majors.
    3. The committee secretary announced that the 498 R course is active.  Any department who wishes to have the 498R course as part of a subject area should make a request to Pat Waege in the Registrar's office.
  16. Election of UCC representatives to replace Beth Olson and Jolly Emrey whose terms have expired was held.  It was moved that we reappoint both Beth and Jolly to another term. The motion passed unanimously.  Beth agreed to serve another term and since Jolly was absent from the meeting, the secretary agreed to contact her to see if she was agreeable to another term.  If not, we would need to select someone else at our next meeting.  [Jolly has agreed to another term].
  17. The meeting adjourned on a House/Olson motion.
