COLLEGE OF LETTERS & SCIENCES
CURRICULUM COMMITTEE

AGENDA

The Committee will meet THURSDAY, October 2,  2008
at 2:15 PM in White 6C

  1. Approval of the September 4, 2008 Minutes.
  2. Election of a replacement for Jeff Zimmerman on the UCC (1 year term)
  3. Announcements
  4. Review the curricular process
  5. Biological Sciences
    1. New emphasis Biology Honors (This program is a consolidation of the two current honors emphases that extend the learning objectives of the current traditional Biology emphases. The principal goal of the honors program is to train our better students more thoroughly so they can more often enter, and succeed in, highly competitive professional and graduate programs. The main learning objective is to produce students with strong research and analytical skills).
    2. Deletion of the following submajors:
      1. Cell/Physiology-Honors
      2. Ecology/Field-Honors  (Changes initially proposed within the Biology department to our two honors emphases were aimed at increasing the flexibility for honors students to better tailor their coursework to their career goals. Consequently, it became clear that there were minimal differences separating these two emphases, and so it seemed logical to simply create a new, Biology Honors emphasis, and delete both the Cell/Physiology Honors and the Ecology/Field Honors emphases ).
    3. Deletion of the Biotechnology submajor.  (Recent changes in our cell/physiology emphasis have rendered the Biotechnology emphasis unnecessary, as students will now have the flexibility to complete the equivalent of the Biotechnology emphasis through completion of the Cell/Physiology Emphasis. Also, this Biotechnology emphasis has never caught on among students, and very few have opted for it)
    4. Change in the Pre-professional Medical Emphasis.  (The requirements of professional schools are outside the purview of the UW-Whitewater. However, accurately conveying these requirements to our students is an imperative for the university).
  6. Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminal Justice
    1. Change in the Asian Studies Minor.  (All of the changes here are to update the Asian Studies minor curriculum to reflect new, deleted or changed courses).
  7. Political Science
    1. Change in the Political Science Education Emphasis Minor.  (The POLITICAL SCIENCE EDUCATION EMPHASIS MINOR is being reduced from 21 credits to 18 credits. In addition, a more limited selection of courses is to be allowed in order to complete this minor).
  8. Informational Items
    1. Change in the Management Computer Systems Major.  (The requirement that students take one of ACCOUNTING 249, 341, or 342 is being replaced by the requirement that students take ACCOUNTING 249).
    2. Change in the Actuarial Mathematics Minor(The requirement that students take one of ACCOUNTING 249, 341, or 342 is being replaced by the requirement that students take ACCOUNTING 249).
    3. Requisite change for the following Mathematics courses::
      1. MATH 253 Calculus and Analytic Geometry I.  (From "MATH 152 or equivalent high school preparation as determined by the Mathematics Department. Unreq: MATH 243 and MATH 250" To "MATH 152 with a grade of C or better or equivalent high school preparation as determined by the Mathematics Department. Unreq: MATH 243 and MATH 250").
      2. MATH 254 Calculus and Analytic Geometry II (From "MATH 250 with a grade of B or better, or MATH 253" To "MATH 250 with a grade of B or better, or MATH 253 with a grade of C or better").
      3. MATH 255 Calculus and Analytic Geometry III (From "MATH 254" To "MATH 254 with a grade of C or better").
      4. MATH 280 Discrete Mathematics (From "MATH 250 with a grade of C or better, or MATH 253" To "MATH 250 with a grade of B or better, or MATH 253 with a grade of C or better").
    4. Cross list SOCIOLGY 290 "Sociology of Pacific Asia" with ASIANST. (This course serves as an introduction-foundation course in the Asian Studies minor.  Students who declare the Asian Studies minor and others with an interest in Asian Studies have had difficulty locating Asian Studies courses when making course selections.  Almost all courses in the Asian Studies minor curriculum have course numbers in eight different academic departments.  Cross-listing this course will improve visibility for the program and helps to inform students about the field of Asian Studies).
    5. Add grade basis to HISTRY 790 "History Workshop".  (Change the grade basis FROM "Conventional Grade" TO "Student Option" (conventional letter grade or P/F).
  9. New Business
