COLLEGE OF LETTERS & SCIENCES
CURRICULUM COMMITTEE

AGENDA

The Committee will meet THURSDAY, October 16,  2008
at 2:15 PM in White 6C

  1. Approval of the October 2, 2008 Minutes.
  2. Announcements
  3. Sociology, Anthropology & Criminal Justice
    1. New emphasis  Sociology -  Family and Health Emphasis.   (Our existing Family and Health Studies Minor, which was implemented in Fall 2001 is currently the Sociology Department’s fastest growing subspecialty (Criminal Justice is the largest), with 73 students enrolled in the Minor.  While we will continue to offer the minor for non-Sociology majors, we believe in the creation of a Family and Health Emphasis will give Sociology majors choosing this course of study a greater identity in our program and will also make this subspecialty more visible to prospective students).
  4. International Studies Program
    1. Change in the International Studies Major (Updates the "approved course list" for the major).
    2. New Emphasis International Studies Major- International Economics Emphasis(This emphasis is designed to give students a strong background in international economics to complement the foreign language and major requirements in Anthropology, Economics (International Economics is a required coursed), Geography, History, Political Science, Religious Studies, Sociology, and Speech. It is particularly appropriate for students who want to go on to graduate school or work in the field of development, political economy, and international banking). See Memo on new emphasis.
  5. Informational Items
    1. Title change for PSYCH 499 FROM "Honors Thesis" TO "Senior Thesis."  (Students enrolled in either the Scientist Practitioner or the Psychological Sciences Graduate Preparation Emphasis who are completing a capstone research requirement are required to enroll in PSYCH 499 for credit in completing this requirement. The title, Senior Thesis, more appropriately describes the completion of this research requirement in the emphasis, as the psychology department does not currently have an honors program within the major).
    2. Requisite change for SOCWORK372 "Social Work Practice II."  ( BIOLOGY 120 is a prerequisite  or corequisite for SOCWORK 311, Human Behavior in the Social Environment I, one of the prerequisites for SOCWORK 372.  In recent years, a number of students have taken BIOLOGY as a corequisite with SOCWORK 311, and failed the course.  Several times, this failed prerequisite was not discovered until one-two semesters before graduation. This action prevents the student from advancing  without completing BIOLOGY 120 ).
    3. Change in the Integrated Science and Business Major(The Accounting department has proposed changing Account 341 to Account 261 and discontinuing Account 342, thus these changes will keep the ISB major requirements consistent with the appropriate available courses ).
