at 2:15 PM in White 6C

  1. Approval of the November 13, 2008 Minutes.
  2. Announcements
  3. Sociology, Anthropology & Criminal Justice
    1. Course revision, description change, and title change for ANTHROPL 320 FROM  "Heritage and Cultural Resource Management"  TO  "Understanding Heritage:  From Landmarks to Theme Parks". (The new title and description are intended to broaden the course scope and focus on the cultural and social dimensions of the broader field of heritage preservation and the political and economic implications of heritage as a definition of ethnic, cultural and other groups. The intention is to make the course less narrowly ‘archaeological’ and by expanding topics to include the anthropological, sociological, political, historical, and economic aspects of the topic).
    2. Course revision, description change, and title change for ANTHROPL 365 FROM "Precolumbian Civilizations" TO "Mayas, Aztecs and Incas: Precolumbian Civilizations."  (The revised course focuses more closely on only a few Pre-Columbian cultures and on specific social, political, and technological aspects of cultures that can be put into context that is relevant to both students of Anthropology and those from other disciplines).
    3. New Submajor "Sociology - Family and Health Studies Emphasis."  (This emphasis is an interdisciplinary concentration that complements the Sociology Major focusing on the social and psychological dimensions of families and health. It integrates career development goals with a foundation in the social and behavioral sciences to provide students with the background necessary to understand and analyze the interrelationships between family and health issues and pursue employment in the human services field).
  4. History
    1. New Course HISTRY 255 "Critical Issues."  (This course examines new historical themes each semester with an expert in the field.  In a small seminar setting, classes will focus on discussion of a variety of different kinds of historical sources and provide the opportunity for students to carry out their own research project on the topic).
    2. Change in the History Elementary Education Emphasis Minor (BSE) TO History Education Emphasis.   (The History Department is replacing two separate history education minors (History Secondary Education Emphasis and History Elementary Education Emphasis) with a single history education minor (History Education Emphasis).  See request to delete the History Secondary Education Emphasis accompanying this change of minor request.  In addition, this request includes minor changes in courses within each required category reflect recent additions and deletions from the History Department program offerings to conform with the current catalog).
    3. Deletion of the History Secondary Education Emphasis Minor. (See explanation above).
  5. Biological Sciences
    1. Change in the Biology-Marine Biology and Freshwater Ecology Emphasis.  (This emphasis is a very demanding program, and the proposed changes not only reflect the changes in the Deakin program, but somewhat reduce the overall burden to the students, making it more feasible for them to complete the program in four years.  At the same time, we have made it easier for students to minor in Chemistry if they so choose.  Other changes are simply typographical corrections).
  1. International Studies
    1. Change in the International Studies Minor.  (The changes in the requirements for the International Studies Minor will introduce more flexibility into the minor which will allow more students to complete their degree requirements with the targeted 5-year period).
  2. Informational Items
    1. Other curricular action to create a language specific prefix for Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and Russian.
    2. Number change FROM FORNLANG 111 TO ARABIC 141 "Beginning Arabic I".
