PRESENT: Ellen Davis, Paul House, Jerre
Collins, Jon
Kane, David Cartwright, Steve Sahyun, Elizabeth
Olson,
Richard Salem, Jim Winship, Ellie Schemenauer, David Welsch,
Debra Heiber, and Elizabeth Hachten,
Chair.
GUESTS: Sarah Sheridan - Social Work
The minutes of the September
6, 2007 were approved on a Schemenauer/Collins motion.
Announcements:
The chair announced that the checked proofs for the new
course catalog are due October 15th. All curriculum changes
submitted to this committee's last meeting in April and the first
meeting in September are not reflected in the proofs but they should be
in the catalog. Pat Waege will be making the changes as she
receives them. If your department wishes to list these changes on
the proofs, that is ok. However, this is not mandatory and you
will not be receiving new proofs.
The chair also announced that the deadline for Fall 08
courses listed in the Academic Calendar is incorrect. The correct
UCC due date is January 16, 2008. Therefore, the deadline for
this committee is November 28, 2007 for the December 6, 2007 meeting.
The problem of students repeating a prerequisite course after
they have taken the higher course was brought up for discussion.
Policy states that a student cannot repeat a prerequisite course for
grade replacement if the student has received credit for a higher level
course in the same department for which the course to be repeated is a
prerequisite or corequisite. This problem has recently surfaced
and the chair was questioning if this is a widespread
problem. Suggestions on how this situation could be identified
and how the students could be made more aware of the policy were
discussed.
Winship/Cartwright moved
to approve the new course SOCWORK 350,
"Psychopharmacology Basics for the Helping Professional." The motion passed unanimously.
Salem/Olson moved to
receive and record the following informational items:
Requisite change for CRIMJUS 325,
"Forensic Documentation."
Add
the Diversity option for CHICANO 150,
"Introduction to Chicano Studies."
New program planning was opened for discussion. The chair
stated that there is interest in the administration in developing new
programs that don't involve new resources. For example,
upgrading an emphasis or minor to a new major. The possibilities
were discussed. The chair requested that members take this back
to their respective departments for discussion.
