CURRICULUM COMMITTEE
College of Letters and Sciences
Meeting of April 24, 2008

    PRESENT:  Ellen Davis, Paul House, Jeff Zimmerman, Jerre Collins,  Jon Kane, Steve Sahyun, Jolly Emrey, Elizabeth Olson, Richard Salem, Ellie Schemenauer, David Welsch, Debra Heiber and Elizabeth Hachten, Chair.

  1. The minutes of the April 10, 2008 were approved on a Collins/Schemenauer motion.
  2. Announcements:  The tentative meeting schedule for the 2008-09 Academic year was distributed.  The Fall 08 schedule is firm but the Spring 09 schedule could have some changes for the April meetings.
  3. The committee was asked to move Items 3A (new Biological Sciences submajor "Pre-Biomedical Professions,"  3B Change in the Biology-Cell/Physiology submajor and 3C Change in the Biology-Ecology/Field submajor to below Item 6 on the agenda.  This was approved. 
  4. Davis/Olson moved to approve the change in the Integrated Science and Business Major. This change clarifies the phrasing for the GPA requirement  from overall GPA to overall combined GPA  to denote that the GPA includes both UWW courses and any transfer courses.  The motion passed unanimously.
  5. Salem/Schemenauer moved to approve the new course ASIANST 488 "Topics in Japanese Studies."   The motion passed unanimously.
  6. Salem/House moved to approve the change in the Sociology -Global-Comparative Emphasis.  The motion passed unanimously.
  7. Schemenauer/Emrey moved to approve the curricular action that allows pre-professional programs to be delcared in the second major segment of the AR and adds the following statement: "NON GRADUATION PROGRAM.  MINOR REQUIRED FOR GRADUATION."
  8. Davis/Salem moved to approve the new submajor "Pre-Biomedical Professions." After some discussion the motion passed unanimbously with the friendly amendment to change the total units required from 56 to 54 by reducing the number of units required in section 12 from one to eight units to one to SIX units. (The change was made on  4/25/08 and the proposal was forwarded to the UCC).
  9. Davis /Emrey moved to approve the change in the Biology-Cell/Physiology submajor and the change in the Biology-Ecology/Field submajor.  Again after some discussion, a friendly amendment  was proposed to change the total units required in each submajor from 34 units to 40 units instead of  42 units as originally proposed.  This reduction was achieved by reducing the number of units required in section 5 of the revised requirements (TO section) from one to SIX units unstead of from one to eight as originally proposed.  The motion as amended passed unanimously. (The changes were made on 4/25/08 and the proposals were forwarded to the UCC).
  10. Kane/Salem moved to receive and record the following Informational Items:
    1. Change in the following Chemistry majors:
      1. Chemistry BSE Major
      2. Chemistry Major-Liberal Arts Emphasis
      3. Pre-Professional Major - Pharmacy Emphasis
    2. Title change and add cross-listing to the Psychology course PSYCH 301 FROM "Physiological Psychology" TO "Introduction to Behavioral Neuroscience."  Cross-lists the course with Biology.
    3. Title change for the Sociology course SOCIOLGY 240 FROM "Introductory Sociology" TO "Principles of Sociology."
    4. Change in the following Sociology Majors
      1. Sociology BABS
      2. Sociology - Criminal Justice Emphasis
The motion passed unanimously.
