CURRICULUM COMMITTEE
College of Letters and Sciences
Meeting of September 7, 2006

PRESENT:  Ellen Davis, Jennifer Thibodeaux, Jon Kane, Steve Sahyun, Jolly Emrey, Elizabeth Olson, Paul Adogamhe, Richard Salem, Tom Schweigert, Debra Heiber, and Elizabeth Hachten, Chair.
    1. Davis/Emery moved to approve the 2006-2007 Curriculum Committee Guidelines.  The motion passed unanimously.
  1. The committee needed to elect a representative to the College Budget and Planning Committee.  Steve Sahyun agreed to serve and was elected by acclamation
  1. Announcements:
    1. The chair announced that the new  +/- grading system, which includes D-, is scheduled to be phazed in beginning with Developmental, 100 and 200 level courses in Fall of 2007  The 300 and 400 level courses will be added in 2008.  The chair suggested that departments who have the grade of "C or better" as part of a prerequisite, should clarify if a C-  will be accepted.  Also, departments should look at required GPAs in their majors, submajors and courses to determine if they want to make changes in light of the new grading system.
    2. The chair suggested that since this in not a course bulletin year, this would be a good time for departments to look at their curriculum and make any needed changs to clean up their majors and minors so that they will be ready for next year's bulletin.<>
    3. The chair brought up an issue regarding the BA requirement that a student take 6 credits of 300 or 400 level courses outside their major or minor.  The question is whether or not a student can use a cross-listed 300 or 400 level course taken under another department's number when the cross-listing is part of the student's major or minor.  For example, a student whose major is in Dept. X takes a course that is cross-listed with Dept. Y under Dept. Y's number but the course under Dept. X's number is part of the major.  Should that course be able to meet the above requirement?  After some discussion, the consensus seemed to be that if the course was taught by a faculty in Dept. X it probably would not meet the requirement.  However, if  the course was taught by a faculty in Dept. Y, it could meet the requirement.  The chair is interested in feedback from the departments and suggested that committee members take the issue back to their respective departments for discussion.  This committee will continue the discussion at a later meeting.
  2. Kane/Sahyun moved to approve the Mathematics minor, "Actuarial Mathematics Minor."  There was some discussion as to whether or not the word "Mathematics" in the minor's title would confuse students because the courses in the minor are all business and computer science courses.  Dr. Kane stated that the minor is targeted toward Math/Stat track majors and that a math background is required.  It was suggested that 3 semesters of calculus or the Probability Theory course be listed as a Unique Requirement.  It was felt that this unique requirement would assure that the student considering this minor would have the necessary math background.  The proposal was tabled so that Dr. Kane could consult with his department  regarding this suggestion.
  3. Emrey/Adogamhe moved to receive and record the curricular action submitted by Political Science to add university requirements to the Pre-Law AR.   The motion passed unanimously.
  4. Kane/Adogame moved to adjourn.  The motion passed uanimously.

Respectfully Submitted
