Meeting of March 22,  2007

    PRESENT:  Ellen Davis, Hassimi Traore, Pilar Melero, Jeff Zimmerman,  Jennifer Thibodeaux, Jerre Collins, Jon Kane, David Cartwright, Steve Sahyun,  Jolly Emrey, Paul Adogamhe, Richard Salem, Ellie Schemenauer, Debra Heiber, and Elizabeth Hachten, Chair.

    GUESTS:  Catherine Chan - Chemistry, Pete Killoran - Sociology, Anthropology & Criminal Justice, Lauren Smith - Women's Studies, and Margo Kleinfeld - Geography & Geology

    1. The minutes of the February 22, 2007  meeting were approved at written on a Adogamhe/Emrey motion.
    2. Announcements:
      1. It has been decided that C- grades are repeatable under the new grading scale.
    3. The chair asked if departments were having  unrequisites and course equivalencies problems. The committee members didn't seem to be aware of too many problems in this college.  The chair asked the representatives to take the question back to the departments and the issue could be discussed at a later date.
    4. The Geography & Geology department requested that their proposals be moved to the top of the agenda.  There was no objection. Therefore, Zimmerman/Cartwright moved to approve the new course GEOLGY 203, " Volcanoes."  This course has been  successfully taught as a Special Studies in the past.  It was felt that the Budget Impact section be expanded and  the prerequisites be clarified.  The motion passed unanimously.
    5. Zimmerman/Cartwright moved to approve the new course  GEOLGY 310, "Rocks and Minerals." Some minor editorial changes were suggested and the motion passed unanimously.
    6. Zimmerman/Melero moved to approve the new course GEOGRPY 245, "Gender and Geography." Again some minor editorial changes were suggested and the motion passed unanimously.
    7. Traore/Davis moved to approve the new course CHEM 488, "Senior Honors Thesis."  Some minor editorial changes were again suggested and the motion passed unanimously.
    8. Traore/Davis  moved to approve the new submajor Honors Emphasis in ChemistryIt was suggested that the Math Calculus sequence and Physics 180 and 181 be listed as unique requirements.  The proposal also needed to list the courses in AR format.  The motion passed unanimously provided the suggested changes are made.
    9. Salem/Melero moved to approve the new course ANTHROPL 310, "Women and the Shape of Latin America."  It was felt that a better title would be "Women and the Shaping of Latin American Culture, and that the reference to reactionary "journal" entries in the Grade Assessment section of the syllabus be changed to "graded reading responsess"   The motion passed unanimously provided the suggested changes are made.
    10. Salem/ Emrey moved to approve the new course ANTHROPL 390, "Anthropological Theory: History, Critique and Current Practices."  The motion passed unanimously.
    11. Salem/ Emrey moved to approve the new Anthropology Minor.   The committee suggested that student learning objectives section be expanded.  The motion passed unanimously provided the suggested change is made.
    12. Emrey/Davis moved to approve the new course POLISCI 416, "The Constitution and Civil Rights."  The committee felt that either the description  for  POLISCI 414 "The Constitution and Civil Liberties" be clarified or that the titles for both of these courses be changed to avoid confustion between the two courses.  Emrey said she would submit a course description change for POLISCI 414.  The motion passed unanimously.
    13. Emrey/Salem moved to approve the new course POLISCI 465, "The Politics of Nationalism."  After some discussion Collins/Kane moved to table the proposal until some of the concens were answered.  The motion passed with 1 NO vote and 1 Abstention.
    14. Schemenauer/Zimmerman moved to approve the new course WOMENST 455, "Issues and Topics in Women's and Gender Studies."   The motion passed unanimously provided the budgetary impact be expanded.
    15. Sahyun/Kane/ moved to accept and record the following information item:
      1. Cross List CRIMJUS 325, "Forensic Documentation" with Anthropology (ANTHROPL 325)
      2. Cross List CRIMJUS 425, "Advanced Forensic Documentation" with Anthroploogy (ANTHROPL 425)
      3. Cross List CHEM 456, " Biochemistry" with Biology (BIOLOGY 456)
      4. Change in the Public Policy and Administration Major
The motion passed unanimously provided the justification for cross listing CRIMJUS 325 and CRIMJUS 425 be expanded.
