CURRICULUM COMMITTEE
College of Letters and Sciences
Meeting on April 6, 2006

    PRESENT:  Ellen Davis, Hassimi Traore, Mike Longrie (Rep.Rebecca Hogan), Jon Kane, Steve Sahyun, Jolly Emrey, Meg Waraczynski,  Richard Salem, Lauren Smith, Tom Schweigert, Debra Heiber and Larry Schuetz (Chair).

    Guests:  Catherine Chan - Biological Sciences
                  Jerre Collins - Languages & Literatures

    1.  The minutes for the March 16, 2006  meeting were approved as distributed.
    2.  Copies of the proposed  revision  of  curriculum proposal forms 3  (New Course) and  4 (Revision or Deletion of  Existing Course)  were distributed and  discussed.  Larry  felt that the information requested in sections 2, 3, and 4 on page 3 of form 3 and page 2 of form 4 was either addressed earlier in the proposal or was not applicable and, therefore, should be dropped.  The committee aggreed and Larry will send the recommendation to the UCC secretary.
    3. Election of two representatives  to the UCC to replace David Cartwright whose term expires and Lauren Smith who is unable to continue her term was held.  Jolly Emrey  and Hassimi Traore were elected by acclamation.  Jolly will fill Lauren's unexpired term and Hassimi will replace David.<>
    4. <>Announcements:   The  secretary  announced that the following members' term expires at the end of the semester -- Ellen Davis, Pilar Melero, Rex Hanger, Tony Gulig, Jon Kane, David Cartwright, Steve Sahyun, and Paul Adogamhe.
    5. Traore/Davis moved to approve the following:

      1. Course revision, description change, contact hour change and credit change, requisite change and cross-listing with Biological Sciences for CHEM 456, "Biochemistry."
      2. Change in  Chemistry-Professional ACS Approved major.
The motion passed unanimously.
  1. Longrie/Emrey moved to approve the following:
    1. New course ENGLISH 230, "Foundations of Professional Writing and Editing."
    2. New course ENGLISH 330, "Manuscript Editing."
    3. New course ENGLISH 332, "Writing for the Web."
    4. New course  ENGLISH 430, "Book Editing."
    5. New course ENGLISH  436, "Topics in Technical Writing."
    6. New  major emphasis/track, BA/BS Professional Writing and Book Publishing.
    7. New minor, Professional Writing and Book Publishing.
    8. New certificate, Professional Writing and Book Publishing.
The motion passed unanimously.
  1. Waracznyski/Schweigert moved to receive and record changes to the the following majors, submajors and minors:
    1. International & Area Studies Majors - Approved Course List (Asia)
    2. International Economics Emphasis (BA/BS)
    3. Asian Studies Minor
    4. International Studies Minor
    5. Economics Education Emphasis Minor
The motion passed unanimously.
