Meeting of April 7, 2005

    PRESENT:   Ellen Davis, Philip Johns, Pilar Melero, Rex Hanger (Rep Margo Kleinfeld), Anthony Gulig, Marjorie Rhine,  Jonathan Kane, David Cartwright,  Steve Sahyun, Anne Hamilton, Meg Waraczynski, Paul Adogamhe, Jim Winship, Richard Salem, Lauren Smith, Tom Swhweigert,  Debra Heiber and Larry Schuetz ( Chair).
  1. The minutes of the March 17, 2005 meeting were approved as distributed with the addition of Meg Warazcynski to those present.
  2. Announcements:  The Chair forcefully reminded the committee that departments should not put off until the last minute before a deadline to submit curriculum proposals.  A large number of the proposals on this meeting's agenda were submitted past the deadline and were either filled out incorrectly or incompletely causing extra work for the secretary.   Please make an extra effort to get proposals to the secretary by the deadline.  The last meeting of this committee for this academic year is Thursday, April 21, 2005 and proposals are due Wednesday, April 13th.
  3. The committee needed to elect two UCC Representatives to replace Phil Johns and Anne Hamilton whose terms expire at the end of this semester.  Since there were no nominations and no volunteers, the election was tabled until the April 21st meeting.
  4. Davis/Waraczynski  moved to approve the following Biology proposals:
    1. New Course BIOLOGY 225 "Science of Forensic Analysis."
    2. New course BIOLOGY 258 "Field Experience."
    3. Change in the Biology submajor:  Biology-Ecology/Field (BA/BS).
The motion passed unanimously.  
  1. Salem/Smith moved to approve the course revision, title change, requisite change for CRIMJUS 325 " Introduction to Forensics."  The motion passed unanimously.
  2. Salem/Adogamhe moved to approve the New Course CRIMJUS 329 " Investigation of Death."  The motion passed unanimously subject to the revision of the Course Justification.
  3. Salem/Smith moved to approve the New Course CRIMJUS 425 "Advanced Forensic Anthropology: Bioarchaeology, Trauma & Pathology." The motion passed unanimously.
  4. Salem/Kane moved to approve the New Minor "Minor in Forensic Science-Criminal Justice Track.  During discussion it was suggested that the number of elective units be changed from 5 to 5-6 and that the prerequisite requiring two lab science courses for the first course (BIOLOGY 225) in the minor be listed in the minor description so that  students are aware of them.  The motion passed unanimously
  5. Hanger/Winship moved to approve the change in the Geography major-Geology emphasis.   The motion passed unanimously
  6. Hanger/Gulig moved to approve the description change and General Education option for GEOLGY 301"Environmental Geology."   The motion passed unanimously subject to the addition of an explanation as to how the course relates to the General Education goals stated in the proposal.
  7. Hanger/Gulig moved to approve the course revision, description change, title change, contact hour change and requisite change for GEOLGY 318 "Structural Geology."   The motion passed unanimously subject to the elimination of  the reference to lab and lecture hours.
  8. Sahyun/Waraczynski moved to approve the course revision, description change, number change for PHYSCS 280, Engineering Mechanics: Statics."  The motion passed unanimously
  9. The New Emphasis "Sociology: Comparative Studies Emphasis."  was withdrawn from consideration pending consultation.  Discussion took place about this proposal and it was the strong consensus of this committee that consultations should take place early enough so that the departments being consulted can discuss the proposal with their faculty; and the signed consultation form should be attached to the proposal before it is submitted to the committee secretary for placement on the agenda.  
  10. Salem/Gulig New Course ANTHROPOL 220 "Tombs, Temples & Buried Treasure: Introduction to Archaeology."motion passed unanimously subject to the clarification of  the General Education designation and a justification as to which goals of Genereal Education the course meets and how  it meets them. 
  11. Salem/Waraczynski moved to approve the change in the Sociology Major.   The motion passed unanimously.
  12. Johns/Waraczynski moved to receive and record the requistite changes for the following Biology courses:

The motion passed unanimously.
