Meeting of April 21, 2005

    PRESENT:   Ellen Davis, Philip Johns,  Margo Kleinfeld, Elizabeth Hachten (Rep. Tony Gulig), Marjorie Rhine,  Jonathan Kane, David Cartwright,  Steve Sahyun, Anne Hamilton, Meg Waraczynski, Paul Adogamhe, Jim Winship, Richard Salem, Lauren Smith, Tom Schweigert, Debra Heiber and Larry Schuetz ( Chair).

  1. The minutes of the April 7, 2005 meeting were approved as distributed.
  2. Announcements:  Meg Waraczynski lead the committee in thanking Larry for his years of chairing the committee. 
  3. Old business:  Election of representatives to the UCC.  Ellen Davis and Lauren Smith were elected by acclamation.
  4. Hachten/Winship moved to approved the new History course HISTRY 422/622 "Great Trials in History."  The motion passed unanimously.  
  5. Hachten/Kane moved to approved the changes in the following History majors:
    1. History Major
    2. History Secondary Education Major
    3. History Public History Emphasis
    4. History with Social Studies Emphasis
The motion passed unanimously.
  1. Hachten/Smith moved to approved the changes in the following History minors:
    1. History Minor 
    2. History Elementary Education Minor
    3. History: Public History Minor
    4. History Secondary Education Minor
The motion passed unanimously.
  1. Cartwright/Waraczynski moved to approved the changes in the Liberal Studies Major with Minor.  The motion passed unanimously.
  2. Cartwright/Waraczynski moved to approved the changes in the Liberal Studies Major with no Minor.  The motion passed unanimously.
  3. Salem/Winship moved to approved the new Sociology major emphasis, "Sociology: Comparative Studies Emphasis." This proposal was withdrawn from the April 7th agenda after it was determined that the departments being consulted were not given enough time to discuss it with other faculty members in their departments.  The consultations did take place and consultation signature pages were submitted to the committee secretary.  After additional discussion, the motion passed on a vote of 11  yes and 4 abstentions. 
  4. Salem/Kane moved to approved the changes in the following Sociology majors and minors:
    1. Criminal Justice Emphasis
    2. Sociology BSE
    3. Social Studies-Broadfield Major Sociology Option I Emphasis
    4. Social Studies-Broadfield Sociology II Emphasis
    5. Sociology Minor
    6. Criminal Justice Minor 
    7. Family and Health Studies Minor  An editorial amendment was made to this proposal to remove BIOLOGY 310, " Biology of Aging" from the minor since this course is no longer taught.  The motion passed unanimously.
  5. Kane/Salem moved to approved the following:
    1. Changes in the following Math and Computer Science submajors:
      1. Mathematics: Computer Emphasis 
      2. Mathematics: Applied Mathematics
      3. Mathematics: Pure Math 
      4. Mathematics: Stat
    2. Requisite changes for the following Computer Science courses:
      1. COMPSCI 171 "Introduction to Programming" 
      2. COMPSCI 302/502 "Computer Logic and Microprocessors"
      3. COMPSIC 307/507 "Micro Computer Applications"
      4. COMPSCI 372/572 "Intermediate Programming"
      5. COMPSCI 381 "Javascript and DHTML"
      6. COMPSCI 382 "PERL and CGI Scripting" 
    3. Requisite changes for the following Math courses:
      1. MATH 141 "Intermediate Algebra"  
      2. MATH 149 "Mathematics for the Elementary Teacher II 
    4. Deletion of the following Math and Computer Science coures:
      1. COMPSCI 161 "Introduction to Computers"
      2. MATH 290 " Spatial Analysis"
      3. MATH 473 "Lightning Radiative Transfer"
      4. MATH 475 "Data Interpretation of Space Science"
      5. MATH 477 "Mathematical Scattering Theory and Applications" 
      6. MATH 483 "Mathemeatical Waves Propagation Theory and Applications"
The motion passed unanimously.
  1. Davis/Sahyun moved to approved the requisite changes for the following Biology courses:
    1. BIOLOGY142 Biology II: Animal Focus
    1. BIOLOGY 200 Writing in Biology
    2. BIOLOGY 251 Introduction to Genetics
    3. BIOLOGY 253 Introduction to Cell Biology
    4. BIOLOGY 254 Biotechnology Laboratory Methods I 
The motion passed unanimously
  1. Hachten/Kleinfeld moved to delete the following History courses:
    1. HISTRY 335 "Virtual History: Working with Computers and History"
    2. HISTRY 360 "Comparative Intellectual History: European and Asian thought"
    3. HISTRY 380 "Germany and Central Europe to 1815"
    4. HISTRY 381 "Modern Germany" 
    5. HISTRY 401 " Diplomatic History of the United States Since 1898" 
The motion passed unanimously
