Meeting of April 19, 2001


PRESENT:  Stephen Solheim, Philip Johns, Elaine Johnson, Frank Luther, Anthony Gulig, Michael Longrie, Jonathan Kane, David Cartwright, Frank Stekel, Anne Hamilton, Meg Waraczynski, Jim Winship, Richard Salem, Jeffrey Heinrich, Brooke Sdano (DAC Rep.) and Larry Schuetz (Chair).
  1. The minutes of the April 5, 2001 meeting were approved as distributed.

  3. Announcements: None.

  5. Election of UCC Representative.  Phil Johns was nominated to serve another term as a UCC Representative.  There were no other nominations and Phil was willing to serve again so he was re-elected by acclamation.

  7. Kane/Salem moved to approve the following new Math courses:

  8. a.  760-463 Complex Variables
    b.  760-477 Mathematical Scattering Theory and Applications
    c.  760-483 Mathematical Waves Propagation Theory and Applications
    Stekel/Longrie then moved to consider 760-463 separately from 760-477 and 760-483.  The motion passed.
    The new course proposal, 760-463 Complex Variables, was voted on and passed unanimously.

Kane/Salem then moved to approve 760-477 Mathematical Scattering Theory and Applications and 760-483 Mathematical Waves Propagation Theory and Applications.  The Physics Department felt that it should have been consulted on these two proposals.  After some discussion, Stekel/Winship moved to approve both proposals pending a positive consultation with Physics.  The motion passed unanimously.

  11. Kane/Stekel moved to approve the New Emphasis/Track - Applied Mathematics of Earth System and Space Sciences Broadfield.   The motion passed unanimously.

Gulig/Longrie moved to approve the number change and requisite change for the History course, "From Newton to the Nuclear Age: History of Western Science Since 1600" FROM 740-333 and prerequisite 900-120 and 900-150 TO 740-165 and No prerequisite and the title change and requisite change for the History course740-200 FROM Historical Analysis in Contemporary Perspective with prerequisites of  740-154 and 740-155 or consent of instructor TO Historical Methods with a prerequisite of "Six credits of history (may include 900-120) or consent of instructor."  Some of the committee members felt that the course, 740-165 From Newton to the Nuclear Age:  History of Western Science Since 1600," should have a prerequisite of a Lab science course.  The motion was voted on and passed with 2 "No" votes and 1 "abstention."
