Third Annual Liberal Arts Essay Scholarship Competition
Sponsored by the University of Wisconsin
System Advisory Group on the Liberal Arts (SAGLA)

The UW-Whitewater Provost’s Office is pleased to announce this year's undergraduate essay competition, one element of an exciting partnership operating at the state and national level. UW-Whitewater participates in the UW System Advisory Group on the Liberal Arts (SAGLA). At the national level, our system-wide Wisconsin initiative partners with the Association of American Colleges & Universities in the LEAP Campaign (Liberal Education and America’s Promise) to promote understanding of a liberal arts and science education's purpose and value. UW-Whitewater is committed to providing an undergraduate education based in the liberal arts to students in all majors and across all four colleges. We invite eligible students from each of our colleges to submit essays to the competition.

Eligibility:
The competition is open to any UW-Whitewater undergraduate student with a current GPA of at least 3.4 who will have completed a minimum of 60 credit hours by the end of Fall Semester 2007 and who has at least one semester (Fall 2008) remaining as a full-time student.

Award:
Each student selected as a finalist in our local campus competition receives a $1,000 scholarship from the UW-Whitewater Foundation to use for educational expenses at UW-Whitewater in the 2008-2009 academic year. Finalists' essays will be entered into a pool of not more than 39 essays to be evaluated by a group of judges from the UW System Advisory Group on the Liberal Arts.

Three University of Wisconsin System winners will receive a $2,000 (one to a student from the UW Colleges and two to students from the UW comprehensive and doctoral institutions). Winners will be notified in spring of 2008 and recognized at a University of Wisconsin System ceremony.

This Year's Topic:
Imagine yourself as a graduating senior with a younger sibling who will be starting college next year. What advice would you offer to this brother or sister who is setting off on the path of a liberal education? What experiences should your sibling anticipate—or seek out—that might afford a richer comprehension of liberal education's ideals?

Submission:
All submissions are to be original essays, 1,000-1,250 words in length, 12 pt. font, double-spaced using Microsoft Word. Each essay must include a title page with the following information: title of essay, student’s name, major, name of institution, name of college, home address, e-mail address, telephone number, and the following statement: “I hereby affirm that this is my own work, an original essay, and agree that it will become the property of the UW System Board of Regents and that it can be reproduced in the public domain.”

Send your submission as a Microsoft Word attachment to lawc@uww.edu.

The deadline is February 1, 2008.
