M I N U T E S CURRICULUM COMMITTEE
College of Letters and Sciences
Meeting of October 14, 2004
PRESENT: Philip Johns, Pilar Melero,
Anthony Gulig, Jonathan Kane, David Cartwright, Steve Sahyun,
Anne Hamilton, Chris Ferguson (rep. Meg Waraczynski), Paul Adogamhe,
Lauren Smith, and Debra Heiber (Acting Chair).
The minutes of the September
30, 2004 meeting were approved as distributed on a Gulig/Sahyun
motion..
Announcements: None
Cartwright/Adogamhe moved to approve the new Political Science certificate
"Lobbying
Certificate." A friendly amendament was made to move
PHILOSPHY 251 (Logic) from Section 3 of the certificate list of courses
to Section 4. The
motion with the friendly
amendment passed unanimously.
Salem/Cartwright moved to approve the new Sociology course, SOCIOGY
371 "Sociology of Homicide." During discussion, it was
pointed out that Section III of the course dealt with international homicide.
It was felt that this international component should be reflected in either
the course title or course description or both. Also it was pointed out
that the Budgetary Impact statement should reflect how this course will
fit into the instructor's normal course rotation (i.e. What course(s) will
he not be teaching when this course is being offered and how does it affect
the current course offerings). Also pointed out was the fact that
current Anderson library holdings were not indicated in the bibliography.
Cartwright/Salem then moved that the course be conditionally approved
assuming the proposer satisfactorily addresses the concerns stated above.
The
second motion passed unanimously. The course will not
go forward to the UCC until the above concerns are addressed.
Other Business:
Tony Gulig questioned why Anderson Library holdings needed to be indicated
on proposal bibliographies in light of UB (Universal Borrowing throughout
the UW System). He felt that most of the material listed in the proposal
bibliographies would be available somewhere in the UW System and that indicating
Anderson Library holdings was no longer necessary. Gulig/Sahyun
moved to recommend to the UCC that they delete this requirement from new
course proposals and course revision proposals. It was then pointed
out that the library did look at new course proposal bibliographies when
placing book orders. Since the majority of the committee was not
aware of this, Gulig/Hamilton then moved to table the motion until the
next meeting. In the meantime Tony Gulig will contact Joyce Huang
regarding this question. .
The motion to table passed unanimously.
