nterim Dean John Stone called the meeting to order at 2:20 p.m.The minutes of the May 8, 2003, meeting were approved unanimously on a Bambi Statz/Pete Mesner motion.
Announcements
- The application for the 2003-04 Graduate Research Grants is available either on-line or in the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs. There are between three and ten of these $500 grants awarded in any given year. Please note that the deadline has been changed from February 15th to October 15th for this year’s application
- Monday, October 13th, is the application deadline for the campus’ outstanding thesis award.There was one submission from last year, which was held over for this year’s competition.There are three students competing this year.The winner of the campus award will be forwarded on to the MAGS regional competition.
- John asked for volunteers that would be willing to serve on the Graduate School’s Committee on Exceptions in short-notice situations.Typically there are situations that require the committee to meet when the regular committee members are not available. Any volunteers should contact the Graduate Studies Office.
- Former Dean Richard Lee sends his best from Lawton Oklahoma.
- In light of the departure of Richard Lee, a study is being conducted as to the reorganization of the Graduate Studies and Continuing Education unit and, at present, the fate of the Graduate School is unknown.
- Starting with the Fall 2003 term, those students who complete a thesis as a part of their degree will need to submit a copy electronically.

Business
- Manuel Ossers moved, seconded by Bambi Statz, to approve the curriculum proposal from the Department of History: HISTRY 615 History of Social Welfare in the United States. Manuel added that this proposal was a noteworthy initiative. The motion carried.
- John Zbikowski moved to approve the new course proposal from the Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Coaching: HEALTHED 671 Research in Health and Physical Activity. Andrew Kapp seconded the motion. Manuel Ossers questioned whether there was justification for this course other than just a need for it.He also questioned whether there had been consultation.John Zbikowski noted that among the elementary and secondary education majors, health education is a popular minor and it is good to give minors more course options.Motion carried.
- Manuel Ossers moved, seconded by Barb Penington, to approve the course revision and course description change from the Department of Geography: GEOGRPY 523 Water Resources.Discussion followed on the status of 500-600 level courses.John reminded the Council of the course currency policy which states that if the course garners no enrollment at the graduate level over the course of four years, the graduate component will be eliminated.The motion carried.
- Upon approval at the College of Education Curriculum Committee, Anene Okocha moved to approve the change in credit from the Department of Counselor Education: 793 Supervised Practicum.Tony Truog seconded the motion.Noting two abstentions, the motion carried.
- Tony Truog moved to approve the deletion of a submajor from the MBA Program: MBA – Health Care.Reasons include no student interest and no staff to teach the courses in this area.Wade Dazey seconded the motion. Motion carried.
- Items G and H on the agenda both required formal approval from the College of Education Curriculum Committee.Anene Okocha moved to approve both the changes in degree from Counselor Education: Add 728 Clinical Studies as core course and add 751 Professional Practices as required course.Tony Truog seconded the motion pending COE approval.The motion carried, again with two abstentions.
- Manuel Ossers moved to approve both of the course currency exercise items from the Department of Curriculum and Instruction: SECNDED 630 The Teaching of Social Studies in the Secondary School (Social Studies Methods) and SECNDED 626 Methods of Teaching English.John Zbikowski seconded the motion.Motion carried.
Items C, I, and J on the agenda (change in degree for MSE-Psychology, change in degree for ED.S., and a new course in Psychology) were not considered as they have not yet passed the College of Education Curriculum Committee. They will be considered at the November meeting.
Other Business
Anene Okocha introduced the Graduate Council student representative from the College of Education, Kerry Nale. She is Counselor Education major.
