GRADUATE COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES


October 10 , 2002
PRESENT: Marshall Anderson, Janet Barrett, Scott Bradley, Ni Chang, Will Drago (for Steven Havlovic), Robert Gruber, Jeffrey Heinrich, Andrew Kapp, Pete Mesner, Leda Nath, Manuel Ossers, Barbara Penington, Don Sorensen (for John Aulerich), Steven Sahyun, Bambi Statz, Tony Truog, Dan Wangerin, and Yushan Zhao.
ABSENT: Paul Adogamhe, *Mohammad Ahmadi, Kathy Asala, *Randy Busse, Wade Dazey, Zoreh Ghavamshahidi,  Dianne Jones, Steven Karges, Richard Lombard, Dan McGuire, Brenda O’Beirne, *John Patterson, and *Tim Reutebuch.

After commending the faculty for finding their way to the new meeting location, Richard Lee called the meeting to order at 2:20 p.m.Manuel Ossers moved to approve the minutes of the May 9, 2002, meeting.Will Drago seconded the motion.The motion carried.


Announcements

  1. John Stone distributed information regarding graduate student headcount and FTE. There has been a significant increase in both areas, due mostly to the increase in on-line MBA numbers. However, these numbers are still well short of the Chancellor’s goal of 8% of total FTE.
  2. John also distributed an overall demographic profile of all students admitted to degree programs over the last four years.If program coordinators would like a breakdown for their specific programs, they should contact the Graduate Office.

Information Only Items

Tony Truog moved, seconded by Bambi Statz, to approve item A of the Information Only item on the agenda. The motion carried.Marshall Anderson then moved, seconded by Andrew Kapp, to approve items B-E of the Information Only items.The motion carried.Information only items included:

  1. Curricular Action: Change in requisites from the Department of Economics: ECON 551 Economics of Asia (Emerging Markets)
  2. Curricular Action: Change in requisites from the Department of Psychology: PSYCH 594 Directed Research in Psychology
  3. Curricular Action: Change in requisites from the Department of Psychology: PSYCH 624 Human Learning
  4. Curricular Action: Change in requisites from the Department of Psychology: PSYCH 745 Assessment III: Intelligence and Achievement
  5. Curricular Action: Change in requisites and grading basis from the Department of Psychology: PSYCH 797 Specialist Research Project

Business Items

Item A of the Business Agenda items, a new course proposal from the Helath, Physical Education, Recreation and Coaching Department, was not considered as it was tabled at the October 4th, 2002, UCC meeting.

Richard Lee then asked the group their preference for approving items B-H on the agenda.Tony Truog moved to, collectively, approve items B-H, seconded by Marshall Anderson.The motion carried.These items included:

  1. Curricular Action: New course from the Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Coaching: HEALTHED 671 Research in Health and Physical Activity
  2. Curricular Action: New course from the Department of Occupational and Environmental Safety and Health Department: SFTYGEN 584 Construction Accident Prevention
  3. Curricular Action: New course from the Department of Occupational and Environmental Safety and Health Department: SFTYGEN 682 Construction Safety Management
  4. Curricular Action: New course from the Department of Marketing: MARKTNG 766 Ethics in the Marketplace
  5. Curricular Action: Change in Major from the Department of Marketing
  6. Curricular Action: Change in Degree from the Department of Reading program: Add EDFOUND 740 as research course.
  7. Curricular Action: Change in Degree from the MS-C&I program: Add EDFOUND 740 as research course.
  8. Curricular Action: New submajor from the Department of Occupational and Environmental Safety and Health: Certificate in Construction Safety
