Announcements
- John Stone introduced Prateek Saraswat, a graduate student in the MBA program. Prateek presented to the Council his reasons for, and interest in, organizing a graduate student organization. He would like a website dedicated exclusively to graduate students, and envisions this being used as a forum for graduate student issues, feedback, and as a directory for graduate students. The Graduate School has e-mailed Prateek’s proposal to all current graduate students to gauge the interest in organizing such a group.
- A summary of preliminary graduate enrollments as of December 1 for the current and each of the preceding four years was presented to the Council.Enrollments are rising, but still not to the Chancellor’s goal.
- The deadline to apply for Graduate Research Grants for the 2002-2003 academic year is February 15, 2003.The $500.00 awards will be used to offset the costs associated with graduate research. The funds must be expended by June 30, 2003.Typically there are between two and nine grants funded each year.
- There was one applicant for this year’s Midwest Association of Graduate Schools Thesis competition.Since one applicant does not constitute a competition, this student will be encouraged to apply for next year’s competition when, hopefully, there will be more applicants.
- Richard Lee spoke to the issue of graduate assistants for the 2003-2004 academic year.Due to the current budget crisis, it is still unclear whether there will be any available.
Information Only Items
Manuel Ossers moved, seconded by Bambi Statz, to approve items A-C and E-G of the Information Only items on the agenda. Business Items
Andrew Kapp moved, seconded by Tony Truog, to approve items A, C and D of the Business agenda items. These were slightly confusing items, so Tony Truog offered an explanation of the changes. When the group had a clear understanding of how the changes would affect programs in Education, the motion carried. On a Statz/Truog motion, item D of the Information Only items was then passed.
- Curricular Action: New course from the Department of Educational Foundations: EDFOUND 780: Techniques of Assessment and Research
- Curricular Action: Change in Submajor from the Department of Communication

Paul Adogamhe then moved to approve Item B, a change in submajor from the Department of Communication, on the agenda.Tony Truog seconded the motion, which carried.
John Stone began a discussion of the issues involved with transfer credits.By this time, though, the length of the meeting was far beyond the amount of time that the Council has grown accustomed to.Hence, this item of discussion will be continued at the next Council meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 3:30 p.m. on a Bambi Statz/Truog motion.
Respectfully submitted,
Sally Lange
