The meeting was called to order at 2:15 p.m. by Richard Lee.Paul Rybski moved, and Manuel Ossers seconded, to approve the minutes of the October 11, 2001, meeting.The motion carried.
Announcements
- There were four theses submitted for the Outstanding Thesis Award.The theses were read and evaluated by four reviewers, one from each college, who then submitted their rankings to John Stone in the Graduate Office.Natalie McEvoy, of the MSE Reading program, was the winner.The title of her thesis was, “Teacher’s Beliefs Regarding Reading and Their Teaching Practices Compared to the Attitudes of Third Grade Students Who have Learned to Read with a Traditional Program and with those Whose Instruction is from a Literature-Based Program.”
- A recent NCA visit revealed a concern regarding the scholarship of students at UW-Whitewater. Faculty were reminded to inform any interested graduate students that there are Graduate Research Grants available which are funded by the Office of Graduate Studies, Continuing Education and Summer Session.The grant awards are in the amount of $500 and are to be used to defray the costs of scholarly activities.Typically there are between 2 - 10 awards each year.Last year there were nine grants funded.The application deadline is February 15, 2002, to the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.
Information Only Items
Tony Truog moved to approve agenda items A-F of the Information Only portion of the agenda.Jeff Heinrich seconded the motion.Information items included:
- Deletion of Course from Department of Management Computer Systems: MCS 781, Management Computer Systems Project I: Research.
- Deletion of Course from Department of Management Computer Systems: MCS 782, Management Computer Systems Project II: Implementation.
- Change in Course Number and Requisite from Department of Management Computer Systems: MCS 785 Information Systems Project Management.
- Change in Course Title and Number Change from Department of Management Computer Systems: MCS 735 Telecommunications and Networking.
- Change in Title, Number and Requisite from Department of Management Computer Systems: MCS 754 Object-Oriented Analysis and Design.
- Deletion of Requisite from Department of Special Education: SPECED 706 Vocational Assessment of Students with Special Needs.
Business Items
Will Drago moved, and Mohammad Ahmadi seconded, approval of agenda items A-E of the Business Items on the agenda. Bob Horton was present to explain some of the rationale for the changes in the MCS program.The market was not right for the original MCS program and, therefore, enrollments never approached what the program thought they would.This revised MSC program will target individuals that are outside of the IT area.With no further questions, the motion carried. Manuel Ossers moved to approve item F, a change in submajor from MBA-Finance.Marshall Anderson seconded the motion, which carried unanimously. The Business Items included:
- Curricular Action: Change in Title and Degree Requirements from the Management Computer Systems: Master of Science in Management Computer Systems, Objectives, and Masters Overview.
- Curricular Action: Creation of New Course from Management Computer Systems: MCS 724 Object-Oriented Programming and Tentative Course Syllabus.
- Curricular Action: Creation of New Course from Management Computer Systems: MCS 725 e-Business: Technology, Applications and Issues and Tentative Course Syllabus.
- Curricular Action: Creation of a New Course from Management Computer Systems: MCS 744 Object-Oriented Programming II and Tentative Course Syllabus.
- Curricular Action: Creation of New Course from Management Computer Systems: MCS 774 Web Development and Tentative Course Syllabus.
- Change in Submajor from MBA: Finance Submajor.
Paul Rybski moved to adjourn the meeting. Bambi Statz seconded the motion. The meeting adjourned at 2:25 p.m.
